The Friends of Woking Palace are offering an exciting opportunity to see the results of this year’s seventh and final excavations at Woking’s very own Tudor Palace at a Special Open Day on Sunday 27 September from 11am until 4pm.
Highlights will include tours around the trenches, where the latest discoveries will be explained by archaeologists involved in the project, plus the chance to meet the Finds Team volunteers, see artefacts being processed and on display, browse local archaeology and history stalls and to take part in family-friendly activities. The last tours will be at 4pm.
This year’s excavations are the very last at the site and part of the three year community-based project called “Woking Palace and its Park” financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund grant awarded to the Friends of Woking Palace. You will be able to find out more about this exciting project including the wide range of community activities that are being organised each year.
Today Woking Palace is a beautiful peaceful site hidden away in the countryside but it was once a large and important palace both owned and visited by royalty including Henry VII, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.
There is no parking available at the site but the Hoe Bridge School is providing a free mini bus shuttle service between the school and Woking Palace for this Special Open Day. The shuttle will start at 11am from Hoe Bridge School and will continue throughout the day with the last journey from Woking Palace back to the school at about 4.30pm. Visitors should follow the signs and park in the designated area at Hoe Bridge School, Hoe Place, Old Woking Road, GU22 8JE.
Alternatively, you can park in Old Woking and walk or cycle to Woking Palace following a signed route down Carters lane (about one mile). Disabled visitors should call 07722 299026 in advance of the event to make special parking arrangements.
