Local voluntary organisations invited to apply for grants

12 July 2016

Local voluntary and community groups are being invited to apply for a grant for the next financial year (April 2017 – March 2018) from today (Tuesday 12 July 2016).

The grants are available through Woking Borough Council’s Voluntary and Community Grants Scheme. This scheme helps local non-profit making community and voluntary groups, who may be in need of financial assistance, to continue providing services to the public.

Organisations seeking financial support need to apply electronically through the Council’s website, www.woking.gov.uk/communitygrantscheme

Organisations wishing to apply for a grant will need to complete the quick and easy registration process and will then be able to submit an application. Those groups which have either applied for, or have been awarded, a grant through the Scheme over the past two years have been pre-registered.

For those people who do not have access to the internet, or are physically unable to carry out the application, help is available through the Woking Association of Voluntary Service (WAVS – 01483 751456), based at Provincial House in Commercial Way, Woking.

Substantial funds were awarded this year (2016/17) to local groups through grants and other types of support provided by the Council, including special rates for community groups renting or hiring Council premises, and discretionary rate relief.

The groups supported by the Council vary from large, Borough-wide organisations such as Citizens Advice Woking to small, local groups such as Woking shopMobility. The scheme supports both capital projects, such as the purchase of equipment, and revenue projects, such as salaries and rent.

Cllr Melanie Whitehand, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Grants to Voluntary and Community Organisations, said: “I am delighted that we are, once again, able to offer local voluntary and community groups our support through the community grants scheme. Local groups provide a wide range of services that are essential to our community and I would encourage any local voluntary group, large or small, to apply for financial support via the Council’s website.”

Application forms are now available. The closing date for completed applications is Friday 9 September 2016. More information is available by visiting www.woking.gov.uk/communitygrantscheme or by contacting Woking Borough Council’s Democratic Services Manager, Frank Jeffrey, on 01483 743012 or email frank.jeffrey@woking.gov.uk
